“The Dry Parched Earth:” The 58th North Carolina Infantry and the Assault on Snodgrass Hill

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On the weekend of June 17 & 18, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present living history programs at Snodgrass Hill focusing on the experiences of the 58^th North Carolina Infantry, a unit which participated in the attack on Snodgrass Hill. Programs will take place at Snodgrass Hill (Tour Stop 8) and will be marked with special event signs.    

The story of Snodgrass Hill is often told from the perspective of the Union defenders under the command of George Thomas, who became known as the “Rock of Chickamauga.” However, the defense of Snodgrass Hill is only half of the story. At 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and
3:30 pm on Saturday and at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, and 1:30 pm on Sunday, living historians will share accounts and experiences of men from the 58^th North Carolina, which suffered tremendous casualties as they stormed Snodgrass Hill late in the afternoon on September 20, 1863. Isaac Bailey, a Chickamauga survivor, later wrote that “the dry parched earth of Snodgrass Hill was never reddened with nobler blood.”
