Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special living history weekend at Point Park on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1, 2013. Throughout the weekend, living history volunteers representing the 16th Alabama Infantry will conduct Infantry demonstrations at Point Park, located on historic Lookout Mountain. Living historians will present talks about the life of the soldier throughout the weekend on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., and Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. They will also conduct rifle firing demonstrations at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and at 10:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Visitors are encouraged to visit the camp throughout the weekend to learn what life was like on a day to day basis for the Civil War soldier. Part of the Confederate Army of Tennessee, the 16th Alabama Regiment participated in the 1863 Chattanooga Campaign. At Chickamauga, the regiment sustained a fifty-nine percent casualty rate – one of the highest casualty rates sustained by either a Union or Confederate regiment in the battle. As part of General Patrick Cleburne's division, the 16th Alabama assisted in defending Ringgold Gap on November 27, 1863. Cleburne's success at Ringgold permitted the Army of Tennessee to retreat to Dalton, Georgia after the Battles for Chattanooga. |
