ATTENTION TEACHERS!!!

Ranger-led, curriculum-based programs are currently being offered at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, where history comes alive!

If you are a K-12, homeschool, or collegiate instructor, and are interested in bringing your students to Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, or Moccasin Bend, or Missionary Ridge please complete the school reservation form and submit it to the park. Once the park receives your form, you will receive a confirmation email. If you are a military unit or ROTC program looking to schedule a staff ride, please visit our staff ride page.If you have any questions about field trip programs, please feel free to contact the park's education coordinator.

Field trip programs offered at the various units are as follows:

Chickamauga Battlefield

These are programs offered at Chickamauga Battlefield. Please meet the park ranger at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center (3370 LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, GA). Buses may unload at the front entrance to the visitor center, then proceed to the lower parking lot for parking. Once students complete their time in the visitor center, they will need to load the buses in the lower parking lot.

Self-guided Programs (mulitple programs may be chosen):

  • Orientation Film - "Death Knell of the Confederacy" (30 minutes)

  • Tour Museum (exhibits and Fuller Gun Collection)

  • Driving Tour of Chickamauga Battlefield

Ranger-guided Programs (please choose one)

  • We Were Soldiers: A Soldier's Experience at Chickamauga (A park ranger will explain what life was like for a Civil War soldier. These programs vary based upon the ranger providing the program. This program is offered M-F. )

  • Lytle: Death of a Warrior Poet (Take a short hike up Lytle Hill to learn about one of the most famous Union generals killed at Chickamauga. Students will also discuss a mysterious poem found in his coat pocket on the battlefield. This program is offered Tu-F.)

  • Marching Home (Meet a veteran of the Battle of Chickamauga and experience the challenges faced by Civil War veterans around Chattanooga during Reconstruction. Students will learn about the rise and influence of veterans organizations like the Grand Army of the Republic, The United Confederate Veterans,and the Ku Klux Klan, and how memories of the Battle of Chickamauga helped fuel both healing and division in the region. This program is offered M-TH.)

Picnic Areas

  • You may choose to use one of the park's designated picnic areas
    (Brotherton Road Picnic Area, Reed's Bridge Road Picnic Area, or the Recreation Field Picnic Area). Please refrain from using the visitor center or any other park area for picnics.

Lookout Mountain Battlefield (Point Park)*

These are programs offered at Lookout Mountain Battlefield. Please meet the park ranger at the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center (110 Point Park Road, Lookout Mountain, TN). Buses may unload at the visitor center then park along Lyerly Street around the corner. Have you completed a fee waiver request? if not, scroll to the bottom of this page in order to receive information concerning a fee waiver for teachers and adults. In addition to the waiver form, you will need to supply a letter on school letterhead stating your purpose for the waiver as an educational institution.

Self-guided Programs (multiple programs may be chosen):

  • Tour Museum (includes self-starting videos and the Battle of Lookout Mountain painting)

  • Walking Tour of Point Park

  • Walking Tour to Cravens House

Ranger-guided Programs (please choose one)

  • We Were Soldiers: A Soldier's Experience at during the Battle of Lookout Mountain (A park ranger will explain what life was like for a Civil War soldier. These programs vary based upon the ranger providing the program. This program is offered M-F. )

  • Walking Tour of Point Park (A park ranger will take students to several prominent locations in Point Park where they will learn about the importance of Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga during the Civil War. This program is offered M-F.) *This program is best suited for older students and audiences*

Picnic Areas

  • You may choose to use the park's picnic area adjacent to the Point Park Visitor Center.

Moccasin Bend National Archeological District

These are programs offered at Moccasin Bend National Archeological District. Please meet the park ranger at the Gateway Site (10 Hamm Road, Chattanooga, TN).

Self-guided Programs (multiple programs may be chosen):

  • Brown's Ferry Federal Road Hike to Tennessee River (1.2 mile round trip) - Trialhead parking is located near 707 Moccasin Bend Road, Chattanooga, TN.

Ranger-guided Programs (please choose one)

  • Peopling Places: The Inhabitants of Moccasin Bend (Join a park ranger on a hike to one of the most important places on Moccasin Bend, Hampton Place. This program will teach students about the American Indians who inhabited Moccasin Bend from 12,000 BCE to 1560 CE. This program is offered T-F.)
  • The Removal West: The Trail of Tears Across Moccasin Bend (Take a 1.2 mile round-trip hike along the Brown's Ferry Road to the Tennessee River and learn about one of the darkest times in American History, the forced removal of the Cherokee.This program is offered T-F.)
  • We Were Soldiers: A Soldier's Experience on Moccasin Bend (A park ranger will explain what life was like for a Civil War soldier. These programs vary based upon the ranger providing the program. This program is offered M-F.)

Missionary Ridge (Sherman Reservation)

These are programs offered at Sherman Reservation on Missionary Ridge. Please meet the park ranger at the reservation entrance (Lightfoot Mill Road, Chattanooga, TN).

*Fee Waiver Information for Point Park on Lookout Mountain

The entrance fee to Point Park is $7.00 per adult (age 16 or older). Children 15 years or younger are free. However, the park offers an academic fee waiver for educational institutions provided that the visit is for educational purposes, and the resources or facilities the group proposes to use support the curriculum related to the purpose of the park. If you are interested in obtaining an application for fee waiver for Point Park, atop Lookout Mountain, please submit the request for fee waiver application form two weeks prior to your visit along with a letter of request on institution letterhead requesting and explaining reasons for the educational visit that are relevant to the parks purpose.
