Contact: Marjorie Thomas, 678-538-1243 Sandy Springs: A colorful new exhibit has just opened at the Island Ford Visitor Center of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA.) The eye-catching drawings, writings and photographs document children's experiences during a series of grant-funded field trips to the park. This fall, the CRNRA welcomed 730 third grade students from six schools to experience an exciting outdoor field trip. This field trip was provided free of charge to the students as a result of a "Ticket to Ride" grant from the National Park Foundation. The grant covered bus transportation to and from the schools, as well as beverages. The field trip consisted of a scavenger hunt hike and fun games that helped the students to understand important concepts relating to the water cycle and the Chattahoochee River as a resource. Students were able to listen to bird calls, examine fungus under a magnifying glass, and identify poison ivy, among other stimulating new experiences. "My favorite part was when we saw the red-tailed hawk, and a woodpecker," wrote one student from Conley Hills Elementary School. Spotting the wildlife and learning about the habitat along the Chattahoochee River was a special treat: for many, this was the first time they had the opportunity to go on a hike or explore the woods. At the conclusion of the field trip, participants produced the detailed drawings and descriptive passages that now decorate the lobby at the Island Ford Visitor Center of the CRNRA. These creative illustrations showcasing their experiences will be on display until March. The public is invited to view this exhibit at the Visitor Center at 1978 Island Ford Parkway, Sandy Springs, GA 30350, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. daily. |
