Over the last couple years, an enormous pond of trash has been accumulating beneath Interstate 285 at the Powers Island unit of the park. This sitting pond of scum was made possible by the flood in 2009 which created a dam of tree branches and sticks blocking the narrow channel between the supporting columns of the bridge and shore - the dam has been acting as a filter ever since. Until April 21st, the floating trash behind the dam extended for several hundred feet.

On that day, volunteers from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper joined volunteers from the Park Service in cleaning out a lot of the mess. Over several hours, 650 pounds of trash was removed and 57 pounds of plastic, 5 pounds of metal, and 9 pounds of glass was recycled. All taken out of the river by canoe.
