ROSWELL, GA – Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) invites the public to review and comment on an environmental assessment (EA) for the Roswell Gateway and Vickery Creek Unit Access Improvements. The EA is open for public comment from July 1 to July 31.

The National Park Service (NPS), in partnership with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the City of Roswell, is evaluating proposals for two (2) transportation improvement projects:

  • State Route (SR) 9 Pedestrian Bridge

  • State Route (SR) 9 Reversible Lane Removal and Widening adjacent to the Vickery Creek Unit (VCU) in CRNRA.

These transportation projects would require the transfer of NPS-managed lands for transportation use. The conversion of park lands to transportation use requires authorization by NPS through special use permits and a federal Highway Easement Deed (HED). Both transportation projects have long-term adverse impacts to park resources.

Mitigating actions to improve access in the VCU have been identified to offset the effects of the conversion of NPS lands and resources into transportation use. Improvements aim to enhance accessibility to CRNRA, protect cultural and natural resources, and provide better connectivity within the unit and across Vickery Creek.

The EA presents two alternatives and analysis of their potential impacts for public review:

Preferred Alternative A– Improve traffic flow, access, and construct pedestrian bridge.

  • Convert approximately 2.59 acres of NPS lands to transportation use along SR 9.

  • Construct a multi-use trail and pedestrian bridge over the Chattahoochee River on the east side of SR 9

  • Rehabilitate and create new natural surface trails, remove decommissioned trails, replace a parking lot at Allenbrook with a parking lot in a new location, and construct a footbridge over Vickery Creek.

No Action Alternative B – Current Management

  • Alternative B, the no action alternative, GDOT and FHWA would not be authorized by the NPS through special use permits or Federal HED to perform any transportation actions within the boundaries of CRNRA.

Public participation is an important element of the planning process, and CRNRA welcomes comments on the EA at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/RoswellHistoricGatewayEA. Comments may be submitted electronically through the website. Additional information on the transportation projects is available on the GDOT website and from the City of Roswell.
