Earlier in the year, the National Park Service received funding for 800 projects totaling $750 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Of that, Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area received $736,000 to fund four projects. The park staff has been working hard to ensure timely contracting and completion of these projects.  As of July 7, 2009, the status of the four projects is as follows:

  • Construct restroom at Cochran Shoals / Columns Drive unit to meet ADA requirements. The restroom will replace the porta-potties at Columns Drive with a permanent restroom facility. This project has been awarded to a contractor with an estimated completion date of early October 2009. UPDATE
  • Improve access to Hewlett Field to meet ADA requirements. This will allow public access to the canoe launch boat ramp at the Island Ford unit. The planning and compliance phase of this project is currently being advertised for bids. Once this phase has been awarded to a contractor and completed, the process will begin again for the construction phase. The estimated completion date for the total project is June 2010.
  • Upgrade park-wide restrooms with low flow technology toilets to improve energy efficiency within the park. Contractors are reviewing this project and providing bids. The estimated completion date for this project is September 2009.
  • Conduct boundary retracement in the park. A portion of the park’s boundary will be located and marked. The park has hired seasonal staff to complete this project and to date the project is approximately 50 percent complete.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will help revive the American economy by quickly creating jobs to generate economic activity in local communities. For the National Park Service, this means projects of lasting value – for the American people and their national parks.
