Happy ending to tragic love story at Chamizal National Memorial's 2011 Siglo de Oro Spanish Drama Festival.Who hasn't read or watched the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet and wondered what their lives might have been like had they lived? What was Shakespeare thinking when he wrote the deaths of two of the most beloved star-crossed lovers of all time? What many people may not realize is that Shakespeare (1564-1616) wasn't the only one to tell that story. In fact, Shakespeare's play is most likely based on earlier authors' literature; all believed to originate with Italian writer Matteo Bandello (1485-1561). And while Shakespeare's play may be the most famous, the very prolific Spanish playwright Felix Lope de Vega (1562-1635) wrote Castelvines y Monteses telling essentially the same story. In Lope de Vega's version both Romeo and Juliet live happily ever after! Chamizal National Memorial, as part of the 2011 Siglo de Oro Spanish Drama Festival, is proud to bring to its stage for the first time The Capulets and the Montagues, an English translation by Dakin Matthews of Lope de Vega's original play. Performed by the professional ANDAK Stage Company of North Hollywood, the play is just one of the five great theatrical performances scheduled during the 2011 festival. The drama festival begins on Wednesday March 2nd and runs through Sunday March 6th. The line-up includes performances by acting troupes from the USA, Mexico, and Spain. With the exception of The Capulets and the Montagues, all performances will be in Spanish. Evening performances will begin at 7:00pm and last approximately 2 hours. Following each evening's performance will be a public Q&A session with the director and actors. Ticket prices are $5.00 general admission, and $3.00 for seniors (62+ years), military (with ID), and students. Tickets may be purchased beginning two weeks prior to the festival or at the door the evening of the performance. Early arrival is encouraged due to limited seating.
