Celebration of 80th Anniversary of First International Park Agreement with Mexico

Superintendent F. Gus Sanchez is pleased to announce a special event to recognize the 80th anniversary of the signing of the first U.S. and Mexico international park agreement signed in El Paso on November 24, 1935.Certificates of appreciation thanking the City of El Paso and El Paso County will be presented by members of the Greater Big Bend Coalition and Forgotten Frontier following a free dance performance at 9:00 a.m. in the Chamizal National Memorial Cultural Center.Dance of the Borderland by Grupo de Danza Rowe from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico will showcase dances from the northern regions of Mexico including Nuevo Leon and Chihuahua.

The presentation will include a video portrait of the proposed Big Bend International Park at Big Bend National Park and adjacent areas in Mexico.The National Park Service was established on August 25, 1916 and is preparing to kick off a second century of stewardship of America's national parks by engaging communities through recreation, conservation, and historic preservation programs.Over the past 80 years United States and Mexican government officials have met in El Paso to discuss the proposal that many people in both countries hope will be established in the near future.On November 7, 1998 Rotary Districts 5520 and 4110 sponsored an international park Dedication Ceremony held at Chamizal National Memorial. On August 18, 2009 the Mayor and City Council of El Paso passed a resolution encouraging President Obama and then President Calderon of Mexico to complete the project.A similar resolution was passed by the El Paso County Judge and Commissioner Court on August 10, 2009.
