Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park Announces Special Programs to Commemorate 10th Anniversary

Middletown, VA ----- Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park and its Key Partners invite the general public to a series of special programs on Saturday, November 24 that will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the park's creation. 

The National Park Service, along with Belle Grove Inc., Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Shenandoah County and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation will offer a series of special programs that will highlight some of the park's more iconic features, as well as historic "hidden gems" within the park that have been preserved through their collective efforts. These include such places as Belle Grove Plantation Manor House, living history encampments and programs at original Civil War entrenchments and the 8th Vermont monument, recently preserved by the National Park Service and Civil War Trust.  

The public is also invited to visit both Belle Grove and Hupp's Hill Civil War Park and Museum. A map locating the program sites and program times will be available at these locations. Each site will also be marked by signage. Programs and demonstrations include: 

Belle Grove Thanksgiving Weekend Historic Tours Belle Grove offers its guests exciting tours of the region's only authentic antebellum plantation. Expert volunteer docents and staff lead guided tours of the historically restored and furnished 1797 Manor House every hour at 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 1:15, 2:15 and 3:15. There is a fee for the guided tours. The grounds are open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm. and are free (336 Belle Grove Road, Middletown).  

Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation - Living History and Interpretation The Foundation will host a living history encampment portraying Civil War soldiers at their 19th Corps Entrenchment Property along U.S. Route 11, south of Middletown (at the site of the 128th New York Monument). Guided tours of the entrenchments will be offered at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.    

Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation - Living History Encampment and Demonstrations  Join a Civil War living history encampment at the site of Civil War entrenchments constructed by the Union 8th Corps (along Bowman's Mill Road). The encampment will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Demonstrations will be offered at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. 

National Park Service - 8th Vermont Monument Ranger Programs-Join a Park Service Ranger and visit one of the few monuments located on the battlefield and learn the story of the New England regiment it memorializes (8739 Valley Pike, Middletown). Programs offered at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. 

Each of the outdoor tours involve a short walk over moderate terrain. Good walking shoes and appropriate cold weather clothing are recommended. For further information on these events, or other park programs call (540) 869-3051 or visit the park website: www.nps.gov/cebe. 

Created on December 19, 2002, Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park encompasses approximately 3,700 acres across three counties and includes the key partner sites of Belle Grove Plantation (owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and managed by Belle Grove, Inc.), Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, and a developing Shenandoah County Park. The partner sites continue to be owned and operated independently.
