Volcano Top Access

Dear Park Visitor:

Capulin Volcano Highway is now a roadway shared by multiple users that include vehicles, hikers, bikers, walkers and runners. Dogs on a minimum 6-foot leash are also allowed on the roadway.

This new access strategy will not take top access away from any group; but will provide more recreational access for those users who wish to have this experience. The park is continually striving to create new ways for visitors to experience this special place and make meaningful connections with the resource. At the same time, we are trying to find ways to better protect and maintain the integrity of the highway so vehicles can continue to access the top.

What I’m asking all of you to do is be watchful of other users that are present on the highway. Follow the new traffic flow sheet and keep vehicle and bicycle speeds at the posted speed limits of 20 mph in general and 10 mph in the S curves. Let’s all stay safe!

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE RULES FOR SAFE TRAVEL TO THE VOLCANO TOP

• Uphill Vehicles yield to Downhill Vehicles, Pedestrians and Bicycles.
• Bikers/Pedestrians stay within designated lane.
• Bikers yield to pedestrians and call out your presence.
• Keep to 20 mph and slow to 10 mph through the "S Curves".
• Watch for speed bumps. These are present to slow you down.
• Use a lower gear when descending to help your brakes and speed.
• Dogs must be leashed at all times (6 ft. maximum length).
• Watch for Rocks and Wildlife on the Roadway.
