Contact: Debra Mills, 301-663-9388 Students from Robert Moton Elementary in Westminster, Maryland, will plant a native wildflower at the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center at 10:00 a.m., April 26. Since September 26, the students have been learning about invasive plants and the impact of human actions on the natural environment. Students learned about native plants through classroom studies, interactions with rangers and a series of field trips. They used their knowledge to choose and arrange the native wildflowers being planted. Representatives from the National Park Service, Carroll County Board of Education, the Catoctin Forest Alliance and the National Park Foundation will participate in a ceremony at 11:30. Ultimately, the landscapes created by the students will be submitted to an online national competition where they will compete for a range of prizes. Winners will be selected via public vote at www.first-bloom.org. Public voting will run from April 15, 2011 to May 16, 2011. Catoctin Mountain Park is one of 394 units administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The park Visitor Center, located on State Route 77 three miles west of Thurmont, Maryland, is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
