St. Augustine, FL – On Veterans Day, November 11th, Castillo de San Marcos will be open free to the public in honor of our veterans’ service to our nation.

We will begin the day with a special flag raising by St. Augustine’s Boy Scout Troop 345. Historian Scott A. Grant will be giving three special presentations about military activity along the coast of Florida during World War II, specifically the sinking of the SS Gulfamerica by German Submarine U-123. Presentation times are 9:30, 11:11, and 2:00pm. Living historians portraying various periods of St. Augustine’s military history will be in attendance, and looking forward to sharing the rich history found only here.

Please join us to celebrate our nation’s veterans and explore the history of the many flags that have flown over Castillo de San Marcos, and the people who have shaped history from within its coquina walls.

The Castillo will be open free to the public from 8:45 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. For questions, please call (904) 829-6506 ext. 233.
