For Immediate Release – August 31, 2016 UPDATE & CHANGE TO CLOSURE St. Augustine, FL – Due to the changing predictions, storm speed, and direction of Tropical Depression 9, Castillo de San Marcos & Fort Matanzas National Monuments WILL BE OPEN on Thursday, September 1, 2016. Both parks plan to be CLOSED ALL DAY on Friday, September 2, 2016. Both parks plan to reopen on Saturday, September 3, barring any extensive damage from the storm.
Fort Matanzas National Monument preserves the fortified watchtower, completed in 1742, which defended the southern approach to the Spanish military settlement of St. Augustine, and protects approximately 300 acres of Florida coastal environment.
For Immediate Release – August 30, 2016 Local National Monuments Closed Due to Tropical Storm St. Augustine, FL – In preparation for Tropical Depression 9 to make landfall and the subsequent impacts to St. Johns County, Castillo de San Marcos & Fort Matanzas National Monuments WILL BE CLOSED on Thursday, September 1, 2016 as well as the morning of Friday, September 2, 2016. Both parks plan to reopen at Noon on Friday, September 2, barring any extensive damage from the storm. Built by the Spanish in St. Augustine to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, Castillo de San Marcos National Monument preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States and interprets more than 450 years of cultural intersections.
