Major Duties:

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, the last home of the Pulitzer Prize winning author, seeks motor vehicle operators to drive the park’s 5-7 passenger wheelchair accessible visitor shuttle. More than one position may be filled from this announcement. All training will be provided. Applicants must have a valid Drivers License but do not need a CDL license.

The position is in the Facilities Management Division. The primary duty is driving the park shuttle to help visitors get around the park. The incumbent will also assist with custodial, historic preservation, and maintenance duties in the park’s numerous historic buildings, grounds, gardens, and trails.

The position is 40 hours per week (Wednesday-Sunday). This is a one-year temporary position and may be extended for one additional year. The employee will earn sick leave and annual leave and will have the opportunity for health benefits.

  • You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.

Education: To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

f you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Applicants will not be rated or ranked. All applicants that meet the basic eligibility and minimum qualification requirements of the position will be referred to the selecting official in preference eligible order.

Additional Bulletin Information:

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent will drive the park shuttle both on shared pedestrian/vehicle in-park roads and on busy county roads. Incumbent may need to lift items weighing over 50 pounds, climb ladders, use power tools, do minor vehicle maintenance, and occasionally assist in the goat barn.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily outdoors in all kinds of weather. This results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may on occasion be performed alone in isolated locations.
  • This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.
