Use these lesson plans in lieu of a visit to the park or to prepare your class for a visit!


Bring your class to the Sandburg Home!

All on-site visits offer curriculum-based lesson plans. Plans cover a variety of education topics including: History, Social Studies, Language Arts, Visual Arts, Drama, English and Science. Email the park's Education Coordinator for more information.

Kindergarten to Second Grade Program

Life on the Farm
Learn about what it was like raising goats with the Sandburg family! Students will tour the farm and grounds. Includes pre and post visit activities to compliment your visit.
On-site Program Length: 1-3 hours depending on group size
Maximum audience: 60 persons

Third to Fifth Grade Program

Sandburg Through Time
Students explore the life of Carl Sandburg through a farm visit and writing activity with a special focus on biography and autobiography. Includes pre and post visit activities to compliment your visit.
On-site Program Length: 2-3 hours depending on group size
Maximum audience: 60 persons

Sixth to Eighth Grade Program

Through the Eyes of a Poet
Students will explore genetics while visiting the barn and reflect while reading, writing and acting poetry. Pre and post visit activities are available to compliment your visit.
On-site Program Length: 3.5 hours
Maximum audience: 60 persons

Ninth to Twelfth Grade Program

The Sandburg Spectrum
Learn how Sandburg was often a voice for those who felt they had none. Program will include a barn tour and Ranger-led activities.
Program Length: 2-3 hours depending on group size
Maximum audience: 60 persons
