Sandburg Home Volunteer House Tour Guide

Man in front of house
The Sandburg family spent 22 years here in Flat Rock, NC. Sandburg the poet and writer, wanted peace and quiet to write, while his wife Paula, wanted greener pastures for the goats, and a milder climate. They found that and more here at thier home on Connemara Farms. The entire family including three grown daughters and two grandchildren moved here in 1945.

When Sandburg passed away in 1967, his wife wanted his legacy to live on forever and donated the contents of their home so that his story would not be forgotton.

Guided house tours through the Sandburg home are one of the most engaging ways for visitors to experience the life and legacy of Carl Sandburg. Volunteer tour guides offer 30 minute tours and illuminate the rich legacy of the home and family. The house is filled with family memorabilia and looks as if the family still live here. Guides offer insight and inspiration throughout the tour, and audio prompts allow visitors to hear the voices of the family telling stories and reading poetry.

House Tour guides work four hour shifts and conduct three to four 30 minute tours with up to 10 people per tour. Committment is either for a weekly shift or for fill in shifts. Volunteers must wear a Volunteer uniform, and follow park safety protocols. We provide uniform shirt, nametag, volunteer should wear khaki pants and closed toed shoes during shifts.

The park provides parking sticker, training, field trips, and an annual volunteer recognition luncheon. Volunteers are essential in offering these expanded services to the public.
