Sandburg Home Volunteer House Tour Guide

Man in front of house
The Sandburg family spent 22 years at the home in Flat Rock, NC. Carl Sandburg, the poet and writer, wanted peace and quiet to write, while his wife Lilian, wanted greener pastures and a milder climate for their goats. They found that and more here at Connemara Farm. The family, including three grown daughters and two grandchildren, moved here in 1945.

When Sandburg passed away in 1967, his wife wanted his legacy to live on forever and donated the contents of their home so that his story would not be forgotten.

Guided house tours through the Sandburg home are one of the most engaging ways for visitors to experience the life and legacy of Carl Sandburg. Volunteer tour guides give 30 minute tours that illuminate the rich legacy of the home and family. The house is filled with family memorabilia and looks as if the family still live here. Guides offer insight and inspiration throughout the tour, and audio prompts allow visitors to hear the voices of the family telling stories and reading poetry.

House tour guides typically conduct three or four 30 minute tours with up to 10 people per tour. Volunteers must wear a volunteer uniform, and follow park safety protocols. We provide a uniform shirt and nametag. The volunteer is responsible for khaki pants and closed toed shoes.
