WELLFLEET, Mass.– Beginning the week of April 14, Cape Cod National Seashore will host the Appalachian Conservation Corps Veterans Fire Crew to conduct hazardous fuel reduction in the park. During their visit, the Veterans Fire Crew will focus on improving access conditions on fire roads in the Wellfleet area. The work is expected to take one week. The Veteran Fire Crews’ primary work activity will be hazardous fuels reduction. Hazardous fuels work may include thinning vegetation, hand piling fuels, and limbing and brushing vegetation.
The Veterans Fire Corps (VFC) is collaborative initiative run in partnership with state and federal agencies including the US Forest Service (USFS), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Corporation for National and Community Service. The VFC engages recent-era Veterans on priority hazardous fuels projects while developing the next generation of wildland firefighters. During the season, the four-person all-veteran crew will gain on-the-job training in hazardous fuel reduction and prescribed burn operations, as well as gaining various certifications in wildland firefighting. This project also fulfills a public purpose by engaging youth and veterans in shared environmental stewardship through job training.
