The Youth Conservation Corp team, consisting of area students has hit the ground running in its first week of work at Buffalo National River. After orientation at park headquarters in Harrison, they were immediately put to work on the repair of the Lost Valley trail where the April flood made closure of that popular hiking area necessary. Participants must be between 15 and 18 years old to participate. This year's youth are from local areas including: Deer, Harrison, Jasper, Western Grove, and Yellville-Summit. Funding comes from the Regional Cyclic Maintenance program monies, supplemented by park maintenance funds. The park was able to hire forty youth workers last year, but only ten this year with a reduction in federal support. The ten were randomly selected from a pool of forty applicants. |
