Jasper, Arkansas – Road construction continues in the Kyles Landing area of Buffalo National River in Newton County. A temporary road closure is in place to allow contractors to resurface the road from the National Park Service boundary to the Kyles Landing Campground. Unexpected weather delays have impacted the project. If there are no further weather delays, it is now expected that the project completion date will be March 10th, 2021. Visitors are asked to continue to refrain from driving in this area, or parking in such a way that blocks access to the work location or private driveways.
The purpose of this project is to enhance visitor safety and enjoyment by improving access to Kyles Landing, a popular campground and boat launch that sees an average of 25,000 vehicles per year. The project also aims to protect water quality by creating a more durable driving surface, stabilizing erodible ditches and drainage outlets, and providing better drainage. This road improvement practice is designed to reduce the amount of sediment that runs off the road and drains into the Buffalo River. It is a part of larger management efforts to conserve the Buffalo National River and preserve the many recreational opportunities found in the area.
In this section of Buffalo National River other recreational areas that continue to be available include the Steel Creek campground and river access, the Erbie campground and river access, the Ozark campground and river access and the Lower Pruitt Landing river access. Hiking opportunities are plentiful including access to the Buffalo River Trail from Steel Creek, Erbie, Ozark and Pruitt. For assistance in planning a trip to the park, please contact a park ranger at 870-861-2570. For updates on these road closures, see https://www.nps.gov/buff/planyourvisit/conditions.htm.
