Habitat

Lives in a wide variety of habitats. Mountainous regions, lowland prairies, sage flats, and alpine forests. In the winter, pinyon-juniper forests, open grasslands, farmlands, and plowed fields.

Diet

Insects and berries.

Identification

A fairly small thrush with a round head and small black bill. Males display an overall sky-blue color with a slightly darker blue on its wings. Females are gray-brown with sections of blue along its wings and tail.

Behavior

Forages from perches, snatching food from the ground as well as mid-air. Fantastic aerial foragers, Mountain Bluebirds can be seen hovering over large fields before pouncing upon insects.

Conservation

Numbers appear to be stable.
