The Blackstone River Valley was the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. With the rise of American manufacturing, people experienced profound and lasting changes to their ways of life. In the Blackstone Valley, industrialists introduced new methods for making products, such as cloth, as well as new types of communities, called mill villages.

At Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark District and Blackstone River State Park, the remnants of early industrial development are still visible.
