What Hazards Do Employees Face?

  • Cars are the main danger to maintenance employees as they work close to the road's edge.
  • Bicyclists may be unable to stop quickly on steep roadways. They may accidentally hit an employee or equipment by the side of the road.
  • Stinging insects live in nests in the ground, or in shrubs and trees surrounding the road. When disturbed by footfalls or loud equipment, they may inflict painful stings.
  • Venomous snakes are less of a threat than you might expect, as snakes generally will move away from activity and predators. However, if cornered, they may strike.

What You Can Do to Help?

  • Slow down when you see signs, they are placed for a reason.
  • Carefully and slowly move around heavy equipment.
  • If roads are closed, it is for your safety, as well as that of employees. Please respect road and lane closures!
  • Please wait until you have a clear line of sight around equipment before passing. Do not pass in dangerous areas such as curves.
  • Please stay out of closed work areas. Signs will specify if visitors may enter an area. However, when in doubt, avoid the area — it is gated, guarded, or fenced off for a reason.

How the Park Keeps Employees Safe

  • Training is the biggest part of keeping employees, visitors, and equipment safe. Information is the most important tool!
  • Placing reflective signs on both the north and south bound lanes so motorists are aware of work being done near the road.
  • The park service requires employees to wear appropriate personal protective equipment including eye protection, ear protection, gloves, work pants, snake chaps, and reflective clothing.
  • Flashing lights are placed on work vehicles to warn motorists of slow moving equipment.
