National Park Service fire crews will conduct prescribed burn operations at Big South Fork NRRA April 6-7.

Locations to be burned are as follows:

Kentucky
  1. Monroe field: 24 acres
  2. Ledbetter A field: 11.8 acres
  3. Ledbetter B field: 19.6 acres
TOTAL: 55.4 acres

Tennessee
  1. Burke Fields: 20.7 acres
  2. Dewy Blevins/Gar Blevins field: 5.8 acres
TOTAL: 26.5 acres

Prescribed fire will reduce the spread of exotic plants, promote the regrowth of native species, and reduce hazardous forest fuels that have accumulated in the area.

Implementation of burn operations is dependent upon a variety of conditions. Prescribed fires are conducted within specific parameters including temperature, relative humidity, fuel moisture, and wind speed to name a few.
