Big South Fork to Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15, 2024 with Discounted Backcountry Camping Permits

Since 1986, the third Monday in January has been designated as a federal holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. On this day, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area will observe Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday by authorizing a 50 percent discount on backcountry camping permits for one day.

Other fee-free days in 2024 include:

1. April 20 - the start of National Park Week
2. June 19 - Juneteenth
3. August 4 - the Great American Outdoors Act anniversary
4. September 28 - National Public Lands Day
5. November 11 - Veterans Day
