On March 7, 2024, Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area will recognize 50 years since its designation as a national river and recreation area. All year long, Big South Fork-area residents, businesses, and visitors will commemorate this special place on the upper Cumberland Plateau, and its significance as a unit of the National Park System.
Established by an act of Congress, the park was set aside as the first park designated as both a national river and a recreation area, reflecting the decision to preserve the area for its many recreational opportunities and spectacular scientific values.
Whatever your fancy - camping, hiking, paddling, hunting, stargazing, mountain biking, or just walking your dog – Big South Fork is a place to escape, explore, and connect. This celebration isn't just about commemorating the past, but also looking forward to the next 50 years of stewardship and inspiration of our place on the Cumberland Plateau.
Whether it’s your first time visiting, or 100th, plan your visit and find your special place in the park today
