Fire crews are planning to conduct a prescribed fire within Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, April 12-14. Prescribed fires, as defined in the approved Fire Management Plan, will be located within the boundaries of the park.

A prescribed fire at Bald Knob in the Kentucky section of the park may be conducted only if weather and conditions meet the defined prescription. Approximately 2,000 acres between Waters Cemetery Road and Ledbetter multi-use trail are scheduled to be burned.

The objective of the prescribed fire burns is to perpetuate fire adaptive species by replicating historic fire frequency, and promote native grasses and forbs. The prescribed fire burns will also reduce natural hazard fuels, which will help minimize fire risk to park and adjacent lands.

During the burns, Kentucky trails between Ledbetter Ridge Road and Waters Cemetery Road are temporarily closed for visitor safety. Visitors are encouraged to check with Bandy Creek Visitor Center before planning their opening morning in the Bald Knob area.

Please contact Bandy Creek Visitor Center at (423) 286-7275 for the latest information on the current status of any burn or associated closure.
