There are many kinds of business opportunities within the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and Obed Wild and Scenic River. From shuttle services to watercraft rentals, there are a lot of possibilities. The National Park Service manages these kinds of commercial activities using a commercial use authorization which is a contract-like form that administers how the services should provide high quality visitor experiences while protecting important natural, cultural, and scenic resources.
Applications for commercial use authorizations are accepted year-round, however, late fees may apply if they are received outside the open period.
This year, the open period is January 1 through February 28.
The reason for this change is to expedite processing by park staff as well as allow for advertisement online and in the annual newspapers. Applications received outside this period will be charged a late fee. This does not apply to one-time business operations or special event vendors.
Those who wish to sell food must not only obtain liability insurance to serve food items, but they must also submit an additional application for review and approval by Public Health and Safety. This process could take up to three months so be sure to submit the applications as early as possible.
