Big Hole National Battlefield

Big Hole is located on Highway 43 ten miles west of the town of Wisdom in southwestern Montana. The physical address is:

Driving to Big Hole:

  • From I-15 at Dillon, MT take Highway 278 sixty-five miles northwest to Wisdom, MT. Turn west on MT Highway 43 and drive ten miles west to the battlefield.
  • From I-15 at Divide, MT take Highway 43 sixty-two miles west through Wisdom, MT to the battlefield.
  • From I-90 at Missoula, MT, take US 93 ninety-eight miles south through the Bitterroot Valley to Lost Trail Pass. Turn east on Highway 43 and drive 17 miles east to the battlefield.
  • From Salmon, ID take US 93 forty-six miles north to Lost Trail Pass. Turn east on Highway 43 and drive 17 miles east to the battlefield.

Bear Paw Battlefield

Bear Paw is located on Route 240 sixteen miles south of the town of Chinook in north-central Montana.

Driving to Bear Paw

  • From I-15 at Shelby, MT, take US 2 one-hundred twenty-three miles east to Chinook, MT. Turn south on Cleveland Rd/Route 240 and drive sixteen miles south to the battlefield.
  • From I-15 at Great Falls, MT take Highway 87 one-hundred-ten miles northeast to Havre, MT. Turn east on US 2 twenty-five miles to Chinook, MT. Turn south on Cleveland Rd/Route 240 and drive sixteen miles south to the battlefield.
  • From I-91 at Malta, MT take US 2 sixty-six miles west to Chinook, MT. Turn south on Cleveland Rd/Route 240 and drive sixteen miles south to the battlefield.
  • Alternatively, in Chinook you could turn south on Indiana Street and first visit the Blaine County Museum, our NPS partner in town. They are located at 501 Indiana Street. Large highways signs indicate where to turn. Continuing south on Indiana street after your visit connects to Cleveland Rd/Route 240.
