A Fun and Educational Visit for All Ages

A trip to Big Hole National Battlefield is more than just a history lesson—it’s an immersive experience filled with activities that engage, educate, and entertain visitors of all ages. Here, the past comes alive through interactive exhibits, ranger-led programs, and self-guided trails that allow you to walk in the footsteps of the Nez Perce people.

For families, there’s plenty to explore together. Children and young learners can take part in the Junior Ranger program, where they can answer questions about the battle, discover unique artifacts in the museum, and gain insights into the Nez Perce culture and the events of 1877. Once they complete the program booklet, they’re awarded an official Junior Ranger Badge, a memento of their experience and a symbol of their new role as stewards of this historic site.

The Visitor Center offers a welcoming space to start your journey, with an award-winning film, Weet'uciklitukt: There's No Turning Back, Battle at Big Hole, which provides an engaging introduction to the history and significance of the battlefield. The outdoor observation deck offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, allowing visitors to imagine the events that took place on this sacred ground.
