Preparation

Winter is a great time to visit Bandelier National Monument. But make sure you prepare beforehand!

  • Check out the park's Basic Information page first.
  • Plan your park activities ahead of time. Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back; there is no cell service.
  • Check the park's Alerts & Conditions page for updates. Inclement weather sometimes causes the park to close for safety reasons.
  • Check the weather forecast. Stay flexible and be ready to change plans if there is excessive cold or a large storm in the forecast.
  • Bring food, water, and snacks. The restaurant closes in winter, and water bottle fill stations frequently freeze. The park store has bottles of water and a few snack items available to purchase.
  • Bring and wear layers of winter clothing.

Visiting During the Holidays

The holidays are often one of the busiest times of the year at Bandelier.

It is recommended to arrive before 9 am or after 3 pm to avoid parking lot congestion. At this time of year, it is very common for the parking lots in Frijoles Canyon to reach full capacity. When this happens, visitors are not permitted to enter and are asked to return later in the day.

Nearby Attractions

If Bandelier's parking lots are filled up, consider visiting some of these nearby attractions.

Shuttles

The Bandelier shuttle is seasonally operated and does not run this time of year.
