Light-colored volcanic tuff overlies darker, harder basalt

Prior to the creation of the Pajarito Plateau, smaller volcanoes here and to the east had covered a wide area with basaltic lava flows. You can see the dark basalt at the bottom of the canyon and at your feet. In contrast to tuff, basalt is a hard, dense, and dark colored rock.
