Stop 13: Did you notice the change in vegetation as you rounded the last bend in the trail? Leaving behind the towering Ponderosas and scrubby oaks you are now passing Broad-leaved yucca (Yucca baccata), Mormon tea (Ephedra viridis), and walking stick cholla (Opuntia imbricate). The environment here is much drier and rockier than it was higher in the canyon. These plants have leaves that preserve water and lose less moisture to evaporation.
