Bandelier Announces Public Scoping for Frijoles Mesa Facilities Improvement Project, Funded by Recovery Act
Los Alamos, NM – Bandelier National Monument Superintendent Jason Lott announces public scoping for the Frijoles Mesa Facilities Improvement Project. “The National Park Service (NPS) and Bandelier National Monument (the Park) are seeking public input on several related facility improvement projects to be funded by the American Reinvestment Recovery Act (ARRA),” said Lott. “The purpose of these projects are to: (1) mitigate erosion and improve paving, campsites, and utility infrastructure to existing facilities at Juniper Campground to enhance visitor experience and increase resource stabilization; (2) repair crumbling roads and improve drainage in several areas where erosion has degraded Park resources; (3) install a net-metering solar-power generating system at the maintenance yard that will produce approximately 25-kW of renewable energy to power facility operations and advance the Park’s Climate-Friendly goals.”
In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the NPS will prepare an environmental assessment (EA) for this project. The EA will analyze and disclose potential impacts of implementing the proposed actions, as well as the impacts of not doing so. As such, Bandelier is requesting input from organizations, agencies, and individuals as part of the scoping process. The purpose of scoping is to identify the range of issues to be addressed in the EA, as well as potential alternatives for the project. The park is also collecting comments for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act on the effect the projects may have on historic resources. The public is invited to direct concerns or comments regarding this project to Superintendent Lott.
Information regarding the Frijoles Mesa Facilities Improvements Project will be posted on the NPS Planning and Environment Public Comment (PEPC) website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/band.
