Know The Lingo!
These terms will help you understand the kinds of issues and concepts that are related to adventuring into the world of historic preservation, conservation and discovery. Read through the list of terms, and their definitions, and complete at least three of the activities below.
Activity: Look out the window and find an object in your view to identify (mammal, building, tree, bird, bicycle) and describe some of the features.
Activity: Ask an older sibling or an adult in your house to give you 5 different food items from your kitchen that have expiration dates on them. Then arrange them chronologically, from first to expire to last to expire.
Activity: Part 1 - Go for a walk with an adult, and see how many pollutants you can count (oil spots in the driveway, dog poop, litter, food waste, etc.) Part 2 - Unfortunately, trash does not always end up in the proper places, like trash cans and recycle containers. With an adult, adventure outside and find a piece of litter that you can safely pick up and put in the trash to reduce the pollution in our environment. You may want gloves, or a paper towel to use as a barrier. Wash your hands after!
Activity: Make a paper snowflake! Get, or make, a square piece of paper and fold it into smaller and smaller triangles, and then cut shapes into it using scissors. Once you're finished, open it back up, and see how many lines of symmetry you can count. Here are some more detailed instructions with photos if you need help getting started, or want to try to make a more difficult snowflake.
Activity: Watch this"Flocabulary" video about the 13th Colonies... What group of Colonies did Delaware belong to?
Activity: Visit Yosemite's website to learn about the Miwok people and their traditions. Think about the kind of traditions your family has, and what you would want to pass down to younger members of your family.
Activity: Visit Kenai Fjords National Park's website to learn how archaeologists in Alaska are unearthing clues as to why and how human culture has changed through the years. If you were to make a time capsule to bury for an archaeologist to find 100 years from now, what items would you choose to represent you and the present day?
