Be a Preservationist!

The study of historic preservation allows us to reflect upon, and build appreciation for, our history as locally, regionally, and nationally! It is a way for people to build connections to one another and learn about the past.

However, historic preservation protects more than physical things, such as buildings and monuments. It can include things like art, food, and cultural dances!

The activities below, and the ones highlighted in the "Next Up" at the end of the pages, will stimulate your curiosity, as you dive into Delaware history. Historic preservation is not a thing that happens once; it happens every day, actively, in many career fields, through the arts, utilizing science, understanding the natural and cultural landscapes around us, and by honoring stories about our heritage. We will use Delaware as a starting place for some of the activities, but other activities are not place-based, and will take you on adventures to other places and ideas.

The Old State House on The Dover Green was originally built like how you see it today. However, there was a time during the English rule where the outside of the building was changed to look more "modern" like how you might change your clothes to match what is in style. However, after Delaware separated from the English the building was restored to its original look.

Above are two photos of the Old State House, on the left is the "modern" style and on the right is the original style. Use your detective skills to slide the bar and see how many similarities you can find, write down your observations on a piece of paper. Why do you think the building was restored to its original appearance when the colonies separated from England?

Historic Preservation allows us to reflect, understand and appreciate our history to build connections to others and learn from the past. However, historic preservation does not just protect physical things such as buildings and places, it can include anything such as: art, food, and dance! Think about something that is really special to you or your family that you would like to preserve - it can be anything! Complete one of the following activities below:
