Campaign Overview

The National Park Service’s “Different Road, Different Ride” campaign raises awareness about the unique road features motorcyclists may encounter in national parks—and shares safety tips to reduce the risk of a crash so that every rider can "Ride for the long haul" and return home safely from their national park adventure. From tight curves that follow the natural landscape, narrow lanes, roads with limited shoulder and markings to blend into the environment, and increased wildlife crossings, park roads often differ significantly from typical roadways.

Key Campaign Messages

Motorcycle riders are urged to:
  • Slow Down on Curves - Be prepared to navigate tight curves.
  • Ride in Center of Lane & Single File - This position and riding formation gives riders more space to maneuver on narrow lanes.
  • Scan the Road for Wildlife – Wildlife like deer and bears can often be found feeding on the side of the road and unexpectedly crossing it, especially at dusk and dawn.
  • Check Weather Conditions - Avoid riding in adverse weather, which can make road surfaces slippery.

Why This Matters

Motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of unintentional deaths reported in parks between 2014 and 2019. On average, motorcycle riders represented 24% of all motor vehicle occupant (drivers and passengers) fatalities in this six-year period.

With roads designed to minimize impact on the natural and cultural landscape, riders must adapt to:
  • Tight curves
  • Narrow lanes
  • Limited shoulders
  • Unmarked or minimally marked roads
  • Increased presence of wildlife
The campaign aims to reduce motorcycle crashes by helping riders understand and prepare for these conditions.
