Biographical Note
Polly Adams Welts as born on December 20, 1929, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her parents were Raymond Welts and Katharine S. Harriman. She had one brother, and they grew up in Haverhill, Massachusetts. She married Roger W. Kaufman, Sr. on June 23, 1951, in Haverhill. They had two children.
She graduated from Pembroke College, the sister school to Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in American Civilization in 1951. Two years later Kaufman received her Master of Arts in History at the University of Washington. Returning to the East Coast, she earned her Doctorate in Education from Boston University (1987), writing her dissertation on nineteenth-century suffrage efforts by women to get elected to the Boston School Committee. Kaufman was a historian, educator, activist, and life-long advocate for the empowerment of women. She co-created and co-taught a course at the University of Massachusetts to train local women to serve as librarians. Between 1967 and 1987 she and her colleagues at Boston Public Schools established more than 120 school libraries. She retired as program director for elementary and middle school libraries for the school district in 1988.
In the mid-1980s, Kaufman was chosen to complete a project, begun by Dorothy Boles Huyck before her death in 1979, examining women’s history in the National Park Service (NPS). In a 1988 oral history interview Kaufman stated, “The Park Service funded my travel for nine months to interview all over the country, to interview members of the Park Service. I'm also doing a history of women in the nineteenth century who traveled or were scientists or were archeologists in parks. It's really been a lot of fun to do that.” The results of her study were published as “National Parks and the Women’s Voice” in 1996. An updated edition was published in 2006.
Kaufman and her husband moved to Maine in 1991. That year she was a visiting professor at Bowdoin College. From 1995 to 2014 she was an associate professor at the University of Southern Maine. Kaufman was also a Fulbright Scholar teaching American Studies in Norway (1999-2000 and 2005). Kaufman co-founded the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail. She also worked with others to develop similar trails elsewhere in Maine and in Norway.
Kaufman also wrote Women Teachers on the Frontier (1985), The Search for Equity: Women at Brown University, 1891-1991 (1991), Apron Full of Gold: The Letters of Mary Jane Megquier from San Francisco 1849-1956 (1994), and Boston Women and City School Politics, 1872-1905 (1994). She co-authored Boston Women’s Heritage Trail: Seven Self-Guided Walks through Four Centuries of Boston History (2001) and Her Past Around Us: Interpreting Sites for Women’s History (2003). Her book of original poetry, The Changing Tides of Maine: Rediscovered Poems, was published in 2021. She also authored numerous articles and gave public presentations on her research.
Polly Welts Kaufman died on January 20, 2023. She was 93 years old.
