Biographical Note

Harold Leslie Peterson was born May 22, 1922, to Leslie Chauncey and Mildred (Croft) Peterson in Peekskill, New York. After education in local schools, Peterson received his BA magna cum laude from Drew University, New Jersey, in 1945. That same year he married Dorothy Parker. They went on to have two children.

Peterson worked for the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1946 while undertaking graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin. He earned his MA in History in 1947 having chosen his thesis subject in military material culture in a department that openly questioned the validity of objects as historical documents.

In August 1947 Peterson got a job as staff historian with the National Park Service (NPS) History Division. He moved from historian to curator back to historian with the History Division, on a recommendation by Chief Historian Ronald Lee. He remained with the History Division for sixteen years, establishing and fostering cooperation between the curatorial and historical staff and dramatically increasing the number of historical objects and specimens the division held.

In 1956 Peterson published his first book Arms and Armor in Colonial America (based on this thesis research). It marked him at once as an authority on the subject. In 1964 he became NPS chief curator. His primary duties related to historical acquisition and authentication. That same year he was also appointed to the Museum Study Team organized by Director George B. Hartzog, Jr. to alter museum organization and practice. He also was instrumental in advising on historical military reconstructions and displays for the US bicentennial.

Peterson was a recognized expert on arms and armor and consulted outside of his work with the NPS. He had his own arms collection and an impressive personal library on the topic. He belonged to several professional organizations and received numerous awards and honors. Peterson served as advisor to organizations such as Colonial Williamsburg, Plymouth Plantation, Henry Ford Museum, and the West Point Museum. He served as president of the Company of Military Historians (1960 to 1963) and held office in the International Association of Museums of Arms and Military History, the Company of Military Historians, and the Washington Regional Conservation Guild. Peterson served several terms as chairman of the board of directors for the Eastern National Park and Monuments Association.

He authored hundreds of magazine articles and 23 books on arms and armor, the military, and social history. Four of these books were written specifically for children. Peterson also served on the editorial staff of several professional publications. He lectured at the Williamsburg Antiques Forum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Historical Society, and many other institutions. He was also interested in and played military music, some of which he recorded.

Peterson was a collector of arms, armor, and antiques in general. His expertise and qualities as a scholar were widely recognized. He received the United States Department of the Interior Distinguished Service Medal in 1958 for outstanding contributions in the fields of historical research and museum planning.

Harold L. Peterson died on January 1, 1978, aged 55.
