Getting to Arlington House

After entering the cemetery, you can:

Bus Service

Visitors with a valid disability placard or proof of disability documentation can ride the Arlington National Cemetery bus at no cost, along with one companion. The Arlington House bus stop is on Sherman Drive on the west side of the mansion.
  • Distance from bus stop to mansion: 425 feet
  • Ramp with 7.5% slope and railings connects the loading zone to the sidewalk.
  • Benches by the loading zone to sit and wait for the bus.

Walking Routes

  • Main Route (includes stairs): About 0.5 miles of steep uphill on paved sidewalks and stairs.
    • From the welcome center, go down Memorial Avenue towards the Military Women's Memorial.
    • At the memorial, turn right on Schley Drive.
    • Turn left on to Custis Walk and continue uphill to Arlington House.
  • Alternative Route (no stairs): About 0.9 miles of steep uphill on paved roads.
    • From the welcome center, go down Memorial Avenue towards the Military Women's Memorial.
    • At the memorial, turn left on Eisenhower Drive.
    • Turn right on Roosevelt Drive.
    • Turn right on Weeks Drive.
    • Turn left on Sheridan Drive.
    • At the intersection at the top of the hill, turn right on the sidewalk and follow it to Arlington House.
 

Wheelchair for Loan

One wheelchair is available to borrow at Arlington House. Ask a ranger or volunteer for assistance.
 

Restrooms

Restrooms are next to the park store.

Women’s Restroom
  • 1 accessible stall
  • 4 standard stalls
  • 1 changing table
Men’s Restroom
  • 1 accessible stall
  • 1 standard stall
  • 2 urinals
  • 1 changing table

Drinking Fountain

There is a drinking fountain and water bottle filler outside the restrooms.
 

Mansion Main Entrance

  • Located on the east side of the building.
  • Metal ramp with 8.8% slope and railings leads onto the portico.
  • Brick ramp with 8.7% slope provides access to the front door.
 

Main Level (First Floor)

Arlington House is decorated to look like it did in 1861, when Robert E. Lee resigned his commission from the United States Army.
  • Please do not sit on decorative furniture with red ribbons.

Watch Your Step

Some carpets and rugs have raised edges that can cause trips or make movement harder for wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

Ramp on Request

  • There is one step between the pantry and the inner hall.
  • Park staff can set up a metal ramp on request.
 

Upstairs (Second Floor) and Cellar

The second floor is closed to visitors.

Access to the cellar is through a door on the the exterior west side of the mansion.
  • There are four steps to enter.
  • Backless benches are along the walls.
A kiosk with a virtual tour of the second floor and cellar is available in the Hunting Hall on the first floor.
 

North and South Slave Quarters

A wide paved sidewalk connects the slave quarters to the mansion.
  • Some rooms are small and may not have space for easy movement with a mobility device.
  • There is a bench in the smokehouse exhibit where visitors can sit and watch a motion-activated video.
  • The summer kitchen in the north slave quarters has a small viewing platform for the split-level room. The viewing window for the upstairs level is 61 inches above the platform.
 

Museum

The museum is between the mansion and the park store and restrooms.

  • Automatic doors for entry and exit.
  • Space to move around with a mobility device.
  • Bench seating inside.
 

Park Store

The store is next to the restrooms, north of the mansion.
  • Automatic doors for entry and exit.
  • Books, t-shirts, and other souvenirs for purchase.
  • Space to move around with a mobility device.
  • Low checkout counter for making purchases.

Check our calendar for upcoming programming.

Ranger talks are held in the mansion or outside depending on the weather. Seating is provided.
