SHARPSBURG, Md.—The National Park Service is preparing to conduct a prescribed fire at Antietam National Battlefield the week of March 13, depending on weather conditions. The planned fire operations will cover 26 acres, southeast of the intersection at Cornfield Ave and Dunker Church Rd.

The goals of this fire are to establish native grass and wildflowers to benefit insect pollinators and to reduce invasive vegetation. Burn piles may also be burned during this time to reduce fire fuels buildup around the Piper House located off Highway 65. The park’s previous prescribed burn was conducted last March near the Burnside Bridge.

Many factors must align to conduct a prescribed fire and ensure public and firefighter safety. The timing of the prescribed fire is dependent on weather conditions being within required wind, temperature and relative humidity parameters. Wildland fire engines, firefighters and the nearby paved roads create buffers and fire breaks to ensure the fire is contained. National Park Service staff will monitor air quality and smoke impacts. Upon completion of the fire activity, wildland firefighters will continue to monitor the area to ensure the fire is contained.

Temporary Closures Planned: During the prescribed fire, Cornfield Ave, a portion of Smoketown Rd and a portion of the Cornfield trails will be closed until operations are complete. Additional roads may need to be closed temporarily if smoke conditions reduce visibility.
