There are public use campgrounds all over the state, from Ketchikan to Nome and everywhere in between.

There is nothing like camping to get a fully immersive experience in the great outdoors. Whether you need ADA friendly campgrounds, boat launches, fishing docks, historical sites, or something more rustic, there is a campground to suit your need. [Note: this webpage is currently being updated to be more comprehensive]

 

Campgrounds in Interior Alaska

Harding Lake State Recreation Area

  • Features: fire rings and picnic tables at each campsite as well as numerous other picnic sites, two picnic shelters, and a dump station

  • Recreational Activities: baseball, volleyball, and horseshoes with equipment available at the ranger station as well as canoeing/boating, fishing, jet skiing, and hiking along nature trails

  • Number of Sites: 90 campsites available including five walk-in group campsites

  • Location: 45 miles south of Fairbanks

  • Maximum Stay: 15 days

Salcha River State Recreation Site

  • Features: water, toilets, and boat ramp

  • Recreational Activities: fishing along the Salcha River

  • Number of Sites: 6 campsites

  • Location: Mile 323 of the Richardson Highway

  • Maximum Stay: 15 days

Rosehip Campground

  • Features: water, toilets and boat ramp

  • Recreational Activities: boating, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, and four wheeling along a forest trail

  • Number of Sites: 37 campsites

  • Location: Mile 27 of the Chena Hot Springs Road

  • Maximum Stay: 15 days

Eagle Trail State Recreation Site

  • Features: campground, boat launch, picnic shelter, water, latrines, phone, nature trail

  • Recreational Activities: mile-long nature trail and 2.5 mile hiking trail

  • Number of Sites: 35 campsites

  • Location: 16 miles south of Tok

  • Maximum Stay: 15 consecutive days

Moon Lake State Recreation Site

  • Features: campground, picnic area, boat launch, water, latrines, water, beach

  • Recreational Activities: swimming, boating, water skiing

  • Number of Sites: 15 campsites

  • Location: 15 miles northwest of Tok

  • Maximum Stay: 15 days

Campgrounds in Southcentral Alaska

Eklutna Lake Campground

  • Features: sites with picnic tables, two picnic shelters, fire pits, water, latrines, and ranger station plus an overflow camping area of 15 sites and a campground host

  • Recreational Activities: fishing, boating, trails for hiking, ATV use, bicycle and horses

  • Number of Sites: 50

  • Location: Mile 26.5 of the Glenn Highway, approximately 35 minutes north of Anchorage

  • Maximum Stay: 15 days

Eagle River Campground

  • Features: picnic tables, one picnic shelter, fire pits, water, latrines, flush toilets, dump station, overflow camping of 10 sites, and a campground host

  • Recreational Activities: fishing, whitewater rafting, and several hiking trails

  • Number of Sites: 57

  • Location: 12 miles north of Anchorage and one mile south of the town of Eagle River

  • Maximum Stay: 4 days

Bird Creek Campground

  • Features: fire pits, water, latrines, campground host, and overflow sites

  • Recreational Activities: fishing, hiking and whale watching

  • Number of Sites: 28 sites

  • Location: about 20 miles southeast of Anchorage

  • Maximum Stay: 7 days

Campgrounds in Southeast Alaska

Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site

  • Features: this 80 acre site has a campground, latrines, water, picnic shelter, and boat launch which are all located in a forested river valley overlooking the river and lake

  • Recreational Activities: boating, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, and day use

  • Number of Sites: 32 campsites

  • Location: 10 miles northeast of Haines

  • Maximum Stay: 15 days

Settlers Cove State Recreation Site

  • Features: this 275 acre site 18 miles north of Ketchikan has a campground, a cabin, toilets, water, picnic shelters and trails

  • Recreational Activities: camping, fishing, hiking, and day use

  • Number of Sites: 14 campsites

  • Location: 18 miles north of Ketchikan

  • Maximum Stay: 7 days
