Description: Rustic Cabin, approximately 16' X 20' Facilities: Sleeps up to 6 people. Includes six wooden bunks, a work counter, table with chairs, diesel oil stove (fuel is provided), fire extinguisher, informational bulletin board, and smoke detector. Has a pit toilet. Fresh water is available nearby but it must be treated. Not included: Running water, electricity, mattress or bedding, cooking utensils. Location: Located on the northeasterly shore of Holgate Arm in Aialik Bay (a 4 hour boat trip or 35 minute flight from Seward). Refer to USGS map, Blying Sound D-8. Terrain/Vegetation: Open spruce forest, boggy ground, abundant blueberries in late August. Cabin elevation is just above sea level. Recreation: Kayaking, boating, wildlife viewing, photography, and limited hiking. Spectacular views and sounds of calving ice from Holgate Glacier. Limited fishing opportunities within the salt water for halibut and rockfish (year round), and along the beaches at Pedersen Lagoon for red (late June to late July) and silver (late Aug. to late Sept.) salmon and dolly varden. A boat is required for access to these fisheries. Review Alaska Department of Fish and Game fishing regulations. Wildlife: Black and brown bears, mountain goat, humpback whales, sea otters, salmon, sea birds and other marine mammals. Specific Consideration: There are numerous bugs; headnets are highly recommended during the months of July and August. Heavy ice pack in Holgate Arm can make boating, kayaking and beach landings difficult at times. Expect to see tour boats daily. Reservations: Occupancy of Holgate Arm cabin is by Special Use Permit Only ($50 per night). Reservations are first-come, first-served and accepted beginning January 2nd, for late May-Labor Day, depending on weather. To make reservations, call or write to: Alaska Public Lands Information Center (APLIC) Reservations can also be made in person at the Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center in Seward's Small Boat Harbor. Due to the high demand for this cabin it is required that reservations be limited to a maximum of three nights per group within the calendar year. Individuals in the same party may not make sequential reservations in order to exceed the three-night limit. Occupancy begins and ends at noon on the assigned days. To cancel, notification is required not less than 10 days in advance of scheduled trip. No credit for cancellations of less than 10 days notice unless cabin is inaccessible due to weather. Refunds only available when reservations were made using an approved Credit Card. Cabin users must have their permit displayed in a window during entire stay. For Your Information:
