WASHINGTON – The National Park Service is taking steps to improve visitor safety along the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail by installing mile-markers. These markers will allow visitors to accurately describe their location in the case of an emergency to law-enforcement or rescue personnel. The NPS plans to start installing the mile-markers on June 7.
“It is our hope that adding the mile-markers to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail will enhance recreation on the trail and increase visitor confidence in their ability to report emergencies,” Tara Morrison, National Capital Parks-East superintendent, said.
The installation will require the temporary closure of six segments of the trail. Each closure is scheduled to last one day, but all work is subject to change depending on weather and project progress.

The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is great for a casual stroll, a jog, a bike ride or a dog walk along both sides of the Anacostia River. The paved walkway continues across the bridges into downtown D.C. with access to the Navy Yard and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Along the way, you'll experience views of the Anacostia River and its wildlife.
