Maia of New Jersey asks, "What inspired you to make this?"

Hi, Maia. Thanks so much for asking! I’ve always been really curious about the things I find while I’m hiking on the shore, like shells and bones and plants, and about ten years ago I started photographing them and trying to identify them. I’ve learned a lot about barnacles and sea glass and periwinkles and seaweed! I also started to worry about how much trash I find, and I’ve learned a lot about where it comes from and how important it is to keep it out of the ocean. I make these still life photos to document the things I find and to think about them, so the photos are partly science and partly art. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference because they both involve a lot of curiosity. If you ever come back to Acadia, come visit my studio!
