The Name Change is Official

The September 2006 General Management Plan for Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site recommended changing the name of the site to Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park.  The addition of the Boyhood Home Site at Knob Creek Farm necessitated the change.

A national historic site is defined as “containing a single historic feature that was directly associated with its subject.”  We now meet the definition of a national historical park, which is “a historic park that extend(S) beyond single properties or buildings.”  To make this change legislative action was required.

On Monday, March 30, 2009 as part of the Omnibus Lands Bill, President Obama signed the legislative that changed the name of this site to Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park.
