Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site News Release - UPDATE The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage. Update - For Immediate Release February 11, 2009 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration Set for February 12
UPDATE: The park will be open Thursday, February 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. for visitors. The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration Ceremony originally scheduled at the park will be held at nearby LaRue County High School. Power has been restored to the park, though due to remaining debris some of the trails will not be open. The visitor center and monument will be open and rangers on site to respond to questions. The ceremony, at the high school, is part of a two year commemoration of Lincoln’s 200th birthday. There are a number of Hodgenville community events that celebrate Lincoln’s 200th over the week beginning with a free public viewing of a Lincoln Documentary, “I too am a Kentuckian” at Hodgenville’s Civic Center Tuesday evening, flag raising and wreath laying at the Lincoln Statue in the downtown plaza Thursday at 9 a.m. A complete schedule can be found at http://www.kylincoln.org, Governor Steven L. Beshear, and United States Mint Deputy Director Andy Brunhart will be part of a program that honors the nation’s 16th president, who was born in a log cabin in Hodgenville on February 12, 1809. Music will be provided by Anne Milligan and Lindsey Wilson College Choral Group who will perform a special musical presentation – “Words of Lincoln,” developed for the Lincoln Bicentennial. Ron Bryant from Kentucky State Parks will serve as master of ceremonies. During the program, the United States Mint will be issuing the first of four newly redesigned one cent coins (pennies) in a coin exchange at the high school. The United States Mint, working with the Lincoln National Bank, will be providing an opportunity at the end of the program for the public to purchase these new pennies. Due to anticipated crowds and a limited supply each transaction will have a minimum purchase is $1 and maximum of $5, the maximum is subject to change depending on supply. The public is encouraged to bring exact change. The program is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 11:00 The event, originally scheduled at the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site, has been moved to the nearby LaRue County High School due to public safety concerns from severe storm damage at the historic site. The school is located at 925 South Lincoln Blvd., Hodgenville. The ceremony at the high school is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. Lincoln Square in downtown Hodgenville will be closed to traffic only during the wreath laying ceremony at 9 a.m. and open the rest of the day with limited parking available along secondary streets.
