Vicksburg Park Visitor Center and U.S.S. Cairo Museum to Close New Year's Day, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day in 2007.

Holiday operating hours for Vicksburg National Military Park will change effective January 1, 2007. In addition to the traditional closure on Christmas Day, the park’s Visitor Center and the U.S.S. Cairo Gunboat Exhibit and Museum will also be closed on the Federal holidays of New Year’s Day and Thanksgiving Day in 2007. The park tour road will be open for its normal operating hours of 7:30 am to 5:00 pm on those days, weather permitting.

Visitation to the park on New Year’s Day and Thanksgiving Day is historically low, except for those people who visit the park to enjoy walking or driving the tour road. Few people come into the Visitor Center or go to the U.S.S. Cairo Museum. The busiest times are actually the day before and after those holidays, for which those facilities will be open. These additional closures will benefit the park by reducing staffing and utilities costs.
