Iron tablet located at Navy Circle on South Washington Street. A detail of the 34th Iowa under the command of Acting Master J. Frank Reed of the gunboat Benton served two 42-pdr. rifled guns in "Battery Benton" from the morning of 1 July 1863 until the end of the siege. A shell from the Confederate mortar in South Fort exploded in the battery on 1 July 1863 killing 1 & badly wounding 4 enlisted men of the 34th Iowa Infantry detail.
