This unit was attached to Brig. Gen. John Gregg's Brigade, of Maj. Gen. Franklin Gardner's 3d Military District at Port Hudson, LA, Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton's Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and commanded by Lt. Col. John Snodgrass. When Gregg's Brigade was transferred north, the regiment remained behind at Port Hudson. Old Douglas Headstone, Cedar Hill Cemetery

The 43d Mississippi Infantry's mascot, Douglas the Camel, remained with the regiment until Vicksburg where he was killed by Union sharpshooters. Douglas is honored with his own grave marker in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
